Beyond the Surface
Understanding
Men's Mental Health
Men's Health Month emphasizes the importance of recognizing and addressing the unique mental health challenges faced by men.
Approximately 1 in 8 men experience depression and 1 in 5 men experience anxiety at some point in their lives.
Men are nearly 4x more likely to die by suicide than women. In many countries, suicide is one of the leading causes of death among men.
Despite high prevalence, men are less likely to seek help for mental health issues. Only about 30% of men with a mental health condition seek professional help.
Men struggle with depression each year.
Understand and Overcome
Common Mental
Health Issues in Men
Depression
Symptoms of depression include persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, fatigue, and changes in sleep or appetite. In men, these symptoms may also manifest as anger, irritability, or aggressive behavior rather than sadness.
Anxiety Disorders
Symptoms of anxiety include excessive worry, restlessness, and physical symptoms such as an increased heart rate. Men might be more likely to use substances to cope with these symptoms.
Substance Abuse
Men are more likely to use and abuse substances as a way to self-medicate for untreated mental health conditions, which can exacerbate mental health issues and lead to a cycle of dependence.
Suicide
Risk factors for suicide include depression, substance abuse, a history of trauma or abuse, and a lack of social support. Additionally, men often use more lethal means when attempting suicide, which increases the likelihood of fatality.
